Retail outlook for the new year

With the beginning of the year not looking so positive it is a welcome surprise that it appears that Australia has bypassed the worst of the global financial crisis (GFC). We are in a prime position to take advantage of the recovery, with IBSWorld forecasting Australia’s GDP increasing by 1.8% in 2009-2010, with growth expected to peak in 2011 – 2012 at 5%.

Australia has performed well during the GFC mainly as a result of insulation, through limited involvement, in the US housing marketing, the Australian Governments stimulus package and China’s stimulus package. China’s stimulus package was the largest in the world and had a direct impact on the Australian economy through commodities speculation, price boosts and demand for products.

The retail industry has fared well after a downturn at the beginning of the year, with the ABS retail stats showing spending increased in the June quarter of 2009. Retail spending is expected to increase over the next few months as a result of income growth, strengthening jobs market and positive sentiment, with a Christmas retail sales expected to do well.
